Preposition

সংজ্ঞা : যে শব্দ Noun বা Pronoun-এর পূর্বে বসে বাক্যের অন্য পদের সম্বন্ধ প্রকাশ করে তাকে Preposition বলে।

Definition : Prepositions show the relation between a word and a noun (or a pronoun) that follows it.

দ্বিতীয়া / চতুর্থী - কে, রে, তে, প্রতি, কাছে - to

তৃতীয়া - দ্বারা, দিয়া, কর্তৃক - by(ব্যক্তি), with (বস্তু), along, through

পঞ্চমী - হতে, থেকে, চেয়ে, অপেক্ষা - from, since, than

ষষ্ঠী - র, এর - 's (ব্যক্তি); of (ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু)  

প্রথমা / সপ্তমী - এ, য়, তে, এতে - to, at, on, in, into, up, upon 

 

Kinds of Prepositions: ইংরেজিতে preposition ছয় প্রকার -

a) Simple Preposition: একটি মাত্র শব্দ বিশিষ্ট Preposition কে Simple Preposition বলে । যেমন: at, by, from, for, in, to, on, of, after etc.

b) Compound Preposition: Noun, adverb ও adjective'র আগে Simple Preposition বসে Compound Preposition গঠিত হয় । তখন on-এর স্থলে a এবং by-এর স্থলে be বসে । যেমন- on + cross = across, by + hind = behind, by + yond = beyond, on + by +out = about

c) Double Preposition: দুটি Simple Preposition যুক্ত হয়ে একটি Preposition গঠন করলে তাকে Double Preposition বলে । 

যেমন- With + out = Without, With + in = Within, Up + to =Upto, In + to = Into, Up + on = Upon

d) Phrase Preposition: একাধিক বা দু-এর বেশি শব্দ মিলে Preposition-এর কাজ করলে, তাকে Phrase Preposition বলে । এ জাতীয় Preposition-এর আগে ও পরে একটি করে Simple Preposition থাকে । যেমন- In spite of, in honour of, by dint of etc.

e) Detached Preposition: যে Preposition সম্পর্কহীন অবস্থায় বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয় তাকে Detached Preposition বলে । যেমন- What is Dhaka famous for?

f) Disguised Preposition: On ও Of-এর পরিবর্তে 'a বা o' Preposition রুপে ব্যবহৃত হয় তাকে Disguised Preposition বলে । যেমন- He went a hunting. He comes at 7 o' clock.

Uses of Preposition

Of এর ব্যবহার

i) সাধারণত 'এর' অর্থ বুঝাতে of বসে ।

যেমন - The English language course of Apex English Academy is very fine.

ii) 'বিদ্যমান' অবস্থা বুঝালে of বসে । যেমন- Bangladesh is a country of peace and happiness. 

iii) ধারণ ক্ষমতার পূর্ণতা বুঝাতে of বসে । যেমন- He died of cholera.

iv) অধিকার বুঝাতে of বসে । যেমন- This is a book of my sister.

v) Relation বা Source বুঝাতে of বসে । যেমন- Hasan comes of a noble family.

vi) অভিন্ন সম্পর্ক বুঝাতে of বসে । যেমন- District of Lalmonirhat.

vii) কোন কিছু দিয়ে তৈরি বুঝাতে of বসে । যেমন- The chair is made of wood.

 

to এর ব্যবহার

i) দিক নির্দেশ করা বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- He has gone to college.

ii) কাছে বা নিকটে বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- He came to me.

iii) মুখোমুখি অর্থ বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- Talk to her face to face.

iv) উদ্দেশ্য অর্থ বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- Send the book to shamim.

v) সময় বাকি আছে অর্থ বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- It is ten minutes to ten.

vi) অনুযায়ী অর্থ বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- I found the place to my liking.  

vii) পরিণাম বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- He was sentenced to death.

viii) পর্যন্ত বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- They fought to the end of the battle. 

ix) অনুপাত বুঝাতে to বসে । যেমন- Four to one he will succeed.

 

At এর ব্যবহার

i) অবস্থান অর্থ বুঝাতে At বসে । যেমন- Shamim is at his office.

ii) তুলনা মূলকভাবে ছোট স্থান ও নির্দিষ্ট কোন স্থিরবিন্দু বোঝাতে at বসে ।

            যেমন- Ali lives at Shantibagh in Dhaka, Please open at page 20.

iii) নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে বুঝাতে at বসে । যেমন- Mamun will come here at 8 P.M

iv) দক্ষতা প্রকাশের ক্ষেত্রে at বসে । যেমন- Saiful is good at Physics.

v) বিদ্রুপের ক্ষেত্রে at বসে । যেমন- Do not laugh at the poor.

vi) বয়স বুঝাতে at বসে । যেমন- He came to the orphanage at the age of four.

vii) তাকানো বা লক্ষ্য করার ক্ষেত্রে at বসে । যেমন- Look at the moon.

viii) মূল্য বুঝাতে at ব্যবহৃত হয় । যেমন- Rice sells at 16 taka per kg.

ix) চরম অবস্থা বা সীমা বুঝাতে at বসে । যেমন- at first, at last.

x) মাত্রা বুঝাতে at বসে । যেমন- The car ran at 100 miles per hour.

xi) গুলি করা অর্থে at বসে । যেমন- The police fired at the mob. 

 

In এর ব্যবহার

i) স্থান বুঝাতে in বসে । যেমন- Sohel lives in Australia.

ii) সময় বুঝাতে বা কোন সময়ের মধ্যে বুঝাতে । যেমন- He will come in an hour.

iii) অবস্থা বুঝাতে in বসে । যেমন- His health is in good condition.

iv) মাসের নাম বা সালের নামের পূর্বে in বসে । যেমন- He will go in April. Bangladesh became independant in 1971.

v) কোন বিষয়ে বা ভাষায় বুঝাতে in বসে । যেমন- Wali reads in English.

vi) পোশাক পরিচ্ছন্নগত অবস্থা বুঝাতে in বসে । He is not in uniform.

vii) মানসিক অভিব্যক্তি যেমন ভয়, সন্দেহ, বিষ্ময়, কান্না, রাগ প্রভৃতির পূর্বে in বসে । যেমন- He cried out in fear.

ix) ঋতু বুঝাতে in বসে । যেমন- He came in winter.

 

 

On এর ব্যবহার

i) সংলগ্ন হয়ে উপরে বুঝাতে on বসে । যেমন- The book is on the table.

ii) সময় বা তারিখ বুঝাতে on বসে । যেমন- Rubina will come to me on 10 January.

iii) নির্ভরশীলতা বুঝাতে on বসে । যেমন- The cow lives on grass.

iv) পক্ষে কাজ করা অর্থে on বসে । যেমন- He is on the committee.

v) কোন উপলক্ষ্য বুঝাতে on বসে । যেমন- I will present you on your birthday.

vi) অনুসারে অর্থ বুঝালে on বসে । যেমন- He acted on my advice.

vii) পরপরই বুঝাতে on বসে । যেমন- On receiving the news she burst into tears.

viii) কোন বিষয় সম্বন্ধে বুঝালে on বসে । যেমন- Write an essay on environment pollution.

ix) বস্তুবাচক এমন ক্ষেত্রে 'অবস্থাটি চলমান' এই অর্থে on বসে । যেমন- The house is on fire, The house is on sale.

x)   Day বুঝাতে on বসে । যেমন- He will go on Monday. Selim was born on Tuesday.  

 

For এর ব্যবহার

i) জন্যে অর্থে for বসে । যেমন- What can I do for you?

ii) কারণ বুঝালে for বসে । যেমন- I could not go out for rain.

iii) কারো পক্ষে বুঝাতে for বসে । যেমন- Rahim will fight for Jahid.

iv) সময়ের ব্যাপ্তি বুঝাতে for বসে । যেমন- It has been raining for two hours.

v) সত্ত্বের অর্থ বুঝালে for বসে । যেমন- For all his riches, he is unhappy.

vi) কারও পরিবর্তে কিছু করা বুঝালে for বসে । যেমন- Natasha acted for Bipasha.

vii) বিনিময় বুঝাতে for বসে । যেমন- I have bought it for ten taka.

viii) কোন স্থানের উদ্দেশ্য বুঝাতে for বসে । যেমন- Rubina starts for Rajshahi.

 

By এর ব্যবহার

i) যাতায়াত বা গমন কোন পথে বুঝাতে by হয় । যেমন- I will go there by bus.

ii) নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের আগেই বুঝাতে by বসে । যেমন- I will come back by 5 P.M

iii) পাশে বুঝাতে by হয় । যেমন- He sat by me.

iv) শপথ অর্থ বুঝাতে by হয় । যেমন- He swore by Allah that he would not steal anymore.

v) নিজে নিজে অর্থে by হয় । যেমন- She lives by herself.

vi) অনুসারে বা অনুযায়ী অর্থে by হয় । যেমন- What is the time by your watch?

vii) ধারাবাহিকতা বুঝালে by হয় । যেমন- His health is improving day by day.

viii) পরিমাপ বুঝাতে by হয় । যেমন- The house is 10 feet by 10 feet.

ix) বৈশিষ্ট্য বা অবস্থান বুঝাতে by বসে । যেমন- He is a lawyer by profession.

x) কোন কাজ যার দ্বারা সম্পাদিত হয়, সেই ব্যক্তির পূর্বে by বসে । যেমন- Hamlet is written by William Shakespear.

 

About এর ব্যবহার

i) প্রায় অর্থ বুঝালে about হয় । যেমন- Now it is about 10 P.M

ii) কোন বিষয়ে সম্বন্ধে কিছু করা বা বলা বুঝালে about হয় । যেমন- I know about him.

iii) চারিদিক অর্থ বুঝালে about বসে । যেমন- There is a lake about the locality. 

 

With এর ব্যবহার

i) কোন ব্যক্তির সাথে বুঝাতে with বসে। যেমন- Selim lives with me.

ii) উপর অর্থে with বসে। যেমন- He is angry with me.

iii) কোন কিছু দ্বারা বা দিয়ে অর্থে with বসে। যেমন- I finally killed the fly with a rolled up newspaper.

iv) সত্ত্বেও অর্থে with বসে। যেমন- With all his weakness, he is a leader.

v) কাজের বিভিন্ন ভাবের জন্য with বসে। যেমন- He reads the book with much interest.

 

Under এর ব্যবহার

i) কারো অধীনে বুঝালে under বসে। যেমন- The man serves under me.

ii) অবিচ্ছিন্ন ভাবে কোন কিছু নিচে আছে বুঝালে under হয়। যেমন- The pen is under the book.

iii) প্রক্রিয়াধীন বোঝাতে under বসে। যেমন- My proposal is under consider.

iv) আয়ত্বে আসা বুঝাতে under বসে। যেমন-  The situation is now under control.

 

Below এর ব্যবহার

i) বিচ্ছিন্ন ভাবে নিচে বুঝালে below বসে। যেমন- The cat is below the table.

ii) কোন পর্যায়ের নিচে বুঝালে below বসে। যেমন- They live below the middle class status.

iii) নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যার কম বুুঝালে below হয়। যেমন- Mamun got below 80% marks in English.

 

Off এর ব্যবহার

i) দূরে অর্থ বুঝাতে off হয়। যেমন- Be off from here.

ii) বিচ্ছিন্ন অর্থ বুঝালে off হয়। যেমন- Switch the fan off.

iii) অভ্যস্ততা থেকে দূরে বুঝালে off হয়। যেমন- He is off his meal.

iv) মূল্য হ্রাস বুঝালে off হয়। যেমন- Tax is 20% off.
